Alice in Wonderland

Disney’s Alice in Wonderland was one interpretation of Lewis Caroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, now it seems another go at this strange tale is in the works with a famed and somewhat’quirky’ director taking the reins for this film set to release in 2010. Controversy surrounds Lewis Caroll’s state of mind during the period in which he wrote these stories, one such rumor was that he was tripping out on acid, or that it was no fault of his own but rather the opium based medication he took for his migraines. Who knows, really? Yet, who better to take this twisted tale of a young girl who journey’s down into a rabbit hole to a ‘Wonderland’ of sorts than Tim Burton! Creator of Edward Scissor Hands, The Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, as well as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – hence Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter – with an all star cast, and different styles of filming in the works to create ‘magic’.

Taking the tale 10 years later than the day Alice first found herself in ‘Wonderland’, this movie has the potential to either be incredible amazing, or too weird for its own good. Yet, I have yet to see Tim Burton fail me, irregardless of being scared out of my wits as a child watching The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride, I found myself finding fond feelings towards these strange characters, as much as I’m sure the rest of the world felt with Edward Scissorhands. Expectations arise, to be both amazed, frightened and awed to see Alice in Wonderland in a whole new way!

Here are a few pictures, and one of my favorite poems of all time, “Jabberwocky” (and there WILL be a Jabberwocky!!!) by Lewis Caroll from Through the Looking Glass:

Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought —
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!’
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
